Drain Cleaning Honolulu

Clogged drains, sewer lines and roots cleared, with a camera inspection when the clog keeps coming back.

A slow kitchen sink after a big family dinner. A shower that turns into a footbath. A gurgle from the toilet every time the washer drains. Most drain trouble starts small, and in Honolulu it usually has a local story behind it: rice and cooking oil in the kitchen line, banyan roots in the sewer lateral, or mud washed into a yard drain by the last Kona storm. Plumber Honolulu Hawaii works out of Manoa Valley on East Manoa Road, and our drain cleaning in Honolulu covers everything from a single bathroom sink to the main line running out to the street.

We clear the blockage, find out why it formed, and tell you plainly whether it is likely to come back. If water is backing up right now, Call (808) 649-6750 and talk to a person, not a recording menu.

When you call, someone picks up the phone. Before we run a cable or start a jetter, we explain what we think is going on and what the work involves, so you are not guessing about the plan. Hawaii licenses individual plumbers through the DCCA Board of Electricians and Plumbers (journey worker and master plumber levels), and plumbing contracting businesses carry a C-37 specialty license from the Contractors License Board. You can look up any plumber through DCCA, and a licensed plumber on a job site should be able to show you the license. We leave the work area clean, and we explain what we found in plain English.

Drain Cleaning and Clogged Drain Services in Honolulu

Drain cleaning sounds simple until you see what comes out of an island kitchen line. Honolulu households cook a lot at home, and many homes hold three generations under one roof. That means rice pots rinsed in the sink, oil from frying, starch from noodles, and plate lunch scraps scraped off before the dishes go in. Rice swells. Grease cools and coats the pipe wall, building a sticky layer that catches everything else.

Bathroom and laundry drains have their own habits. Hair and soap film close up tub and shower lines, while laundry standpipes collect lint, sand from beach towels, and the occasional sock. Store-bought chemical openers rarely clear grease or roots and can be hard on older pipe, so we prefer mechanical cleaning.

Some clogs are not in the fixture at all. If more than one drain is slow, or water rises in the tub when the toilet flushes, the trouble is usually further down in the building drain or the sewer lateral. Sorting out which one you have is the first thing we do.

Serving Neighborhoods Throughout Honolulu

Our own neighborhood is a good place to start. In Manoa (96822), homes range from early 1900s houses to postwar fourplexes and 1960s walk-ups, and many near the University of Hawaii are rentals or multi-unit buildings where several households share one main drain.

Kaimuki, Kapahulu, St. Louis Heights, Palolo, Diamond Head and Kahala share 96816. Kaimuki in particular was built up mostly from the 1910s through the 1940s, with Craftsman bungalows and single-wall construction around Waialae Avenue. Where original bungalows still stand, older cast-iron drain pipe under the house is common, and old joints are where roots and grease settle.

McCully and Moiliili (96826), Ala Moana and Kakaako (96814), Waikiki (96815), and Downtown and Chinatown (96813) are dominated by condos and older commercial blocks. Drain work there often means a kitchen or bath branch line inside a unit, coordinated with building management, and sometimes a shared stack that serves units above and below.

Further out, Nuuanu and Liliha (96817), Kalihi (96817 and 96819), and Salt Lake and Moanalua (96818) mix older single-family homes with newer infill. To the east, Aina Haina, Niu Valley and Kuliouou (96821) and Hawaii Kai (96825) have their own patterns. Hawaii Kai was built on dredged and filled land around Kuapa Pond starting in 1959, so its homes are generally newer, but low elevation and marina water mean drainage and groundwater are worth keeping in mind.

How Local Conditions Affect Drain Cleaning in Honolulu

Pipes never freeze here (the record low is 52 degrees F). What we deal with instead is water, roots, and age.

Green valley and mountain ridge on Oahu

Rain, valleys and Kona storms

Rainfall swings wildly across a short distance. The airport and Waikiki stay fairly dry, while the gauge at Lyon Arboretum in upper Manoa averages around 150 inches a year. The big events usually come with Kona storms in the cooler months, when winds shift to the south and southwest. On October 30, 2004, more than 10 inches fell in upper Manoa in 12 hours and Manoa Stream overflowed, damaging more than 100 homes and UH buildings including Hamilton Library. In March 2026, back-to-back Kona lows flooded the valley again, with water along East Manoa Road near Lowrey Avenue, Akaka Place and Oahu Avenue. Yard drains, area drains at the bottom of driveways, and lanai drains fill with mud, leaves and gravel during storms like that.

Tides, groundwater and low ground

Near the coast, groundwater rises and falls with the tide. During king tides, seawater pushes up through storm drains in places like Mapunapuna, an industrial area near the airport built on fill, and in Waikiki, and groundwater shows up in underground parking garages. In Honolulu the storm drain system is separate from the sanitary sewer. Even so, saturated ground and high water matter for drains in low-lying areas: a yard or area drain that empties toward a street inlet may not drain at all when the inlet is already full, and soggy soil puts extra stress on an older lateral with cracked joints.

Roots and older pipe

Banyan and monkeypod roots are a well known cause of sewer lateral blockages here. Roots find hairline cracks and loose joints, grow inside, and catch everything that comes down the line. Homes built before the 1980s may still have cast-iron drains that scale and corrode on the inside, narrowing the pipe. Several Honolulu high-rises have needed full drain, waste and vent repiping because of corroded DWV piping, and in those buildings a recurring clog in one unit can be a symptom of a stack that is wearing out.

Our Drain Cleaning Options in Honolulu

Kitchen line and grease clogs

Kitchen sinks are the most common call. We clear the line with a cable sized for the pipe, pull back what it catches so you can see the cause, and run water to confirm it drains at full flow. If the line has a long history of grease, jetting may be the better long-term fix.

Bathroom, tub and laundry drains

Sink, tub and shower clogs usually sit close to the fixture and clear quickly. If a toilet is the problem, our clogged toilet repair page covers that work in more detail, and for broader shower and tub issues see our bathroom plumbing services.

Main sewer line cleaning

Sewer line cleaning in Honolulu starts at an accessible cleanout, often near the house or along the side yard. A main line clog shows up as several fixtures backing up at once, often the lowest drain in the house first. In general, the City and County Department of Environmental Services handles the public sewer in the street, while the homeowner is generally responsible for the private lateral running from the house to the city connection.

Tree root removal from sewer laterals

Root intrusion calls for a cable with cutting heads or a jetter with a root-cutting nozzle. Cutting the roots restores flow, but the crack or joint they came through is still there, so roots usually grow back over time. A camera inspection afterward shows whether the lateral just needs periodic maintenance or has damage worth repairing.

Camera inspection

A waterproof camera on a push rod lets us see the inside of the pipe: grease buildup, roots, offset joints, sagging sections, scale in old cast iron, or a broken spot. It answers the real question: why does this keep happening?

Cable and snake vs hydro jetting

A cable machine (the snake) bores through a clog and is the right first tool for most fixture lines and many main line stoppages. It opens a path but does not scrub the full pipe wall. Hydro jetting in Honolulu uses high-pressure water to scour grease, sludge and fine roots off the inside of the pipe, which is why it suits heavy kitchen lines and recurring main line clogs. Jetting is not right for every pipe. Badly corroded cast iron or a cracked lateral may not handle full pressure, so we usually look with the camera first and recommend the gentler option when the pipe is fragile.

Yard, area and lanai drains

Storm runoff drains around the house collect leaves, mud and gravel, especially in wet valleys like Manoa, Nuuanu and Palolo. We clear the grates, catch basins and lines so they are ready before the next Kona system. Where a property floods repeatedly, a pump may be part of the answer, and our sump pump installation and repair page explains that side of the work.

Homes on cesspools

Most of urban Honolulu is on city sewer, but about 83,000 homes in Hawaii still use cesspools, and state law requires conversion by 2050. On a cesspool property, a slow drain can be a pipe clog or a sign the cesspool itself is full or failing. We clear and inspect the line between the house and the cesspool, and if the line is fine, we will tell you so, because pumping or replacing a cesspool is a different job from drain cleaning.

Our Honolulu Drain Cleaning Process

  1. A conversation on the phone

We ask which drains are slow, whether more than one fixture is affected, and whether anything changed recently, like a storm or a new tenant.

  2. Finding where the blockage lives

On site, we run water at different fixtures and check the cleanout.

  3. Explaining the plan before we start

We tell you what we recommend, cable, jetting, camera, or a combination, and why. If the job could grow, for example a lateral that looks damaged, we say so before starting, not after.

  4. Clearing the line

We clear the stoppage and run water to make sure the line drains at full flow rather than just a trickle.

  5. Looking inside when it matters

For recurring clogs, root problems and older pipe, we run a camera so you can see the condition of the line for yourself.

  6. Clean-up and advice

We clean up, show you what came out of the pipe when it is useful, and suggest practical ways to keep it from returning. If a repair needs a plumbing permit through the Department of Planning and Permitting, we explain what the job generally requires and coordinate the work so it is inspected when required.

Local Project Experience

We work on plantation-style bungalows in Kaimuki with older pipe under the floor, Manoa rentals near the university where several tenants share one drain line, condo units in Waikiki, McCully and Kakaako where a kitchen branch ties into a shared stack, and newer homes in Hawaii Kai on low, filled ground near the marina. Each asks something different, but the approach stays the same: find the cause, explain it, and fix what you agree to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clogged Drain Services in Honolulu

How much do clogged drain services in Honolulu cost?

It depends on where the clog is and what is causing it. A single bathroom sink near the fixture is a much smaller job than a main sewer line packed with roots. Access, camera inspection and jetting all affect the scope. We explain what we recommend and what it involves before we start, so there are no surprises.

Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?

Usually grease and starch. Cooking oil, rice and noodle starch coat the pipe wall, and a cable only punches a hole through the middle. Jetting cleans the full wall, and keeping oil and rice out of the sink slows it down a lot.

Is hydro jetting safe for older Honolulu pipes?

Often, but not always. Jetting works well on sound pipe with heavy grease or fine roots. Badly corroded cast iron in a pre-1980s home or a cracked lateral may not handle full pressure, which is why we usually run a camera first and choose the gentler cable method when the pipe looks fragile.

Who is responsible for a sewer backup, me or the city?

Generally, the City and County Department of Environmental Services maintains the public sewer, and the homeowner is responsible for the private lateral from the house to the city connection. If the blockage appears to be in the public main, we will help you sort out whether to call the city.

Can tree roots really get into my sewer line?

Yes. Banyan and monkeypod roots are a well known cause of blocked laterals on Oahu. Roots slip into small cracks and loose joints, then grow into a mass that catches waste. We cut them out and show you on camera where they entered.

My yard drain overflowed in the last storm. Is that a plumbing problem?

It can be. Yard and area drains in Manoa, Palolo and Nuuanu fill with mud and leaves during Kona storms, and a clogged line cannot carry the water away. In low-lying spots, a full street inlet or high groundwater can also slow it down. We clear the line and help you tell the difference.

Do I need a permit for drain cleaning in Honolulu?

Routine drain cleaning generally does not need a permit. Replacing or rerouting drain or sewer pipe usually does, through the City and County Department of Planning and Permitting. If your job crosses into repair, we explain what it generally requires.

How quickly can you come out for a drain clog plumber near me call?

Call and we will tell you honestly when we can be there. A backed-up main line or an overflowing toilet gets treated as urgent. If water is already on the floor, our emergency plumber page covers what to do while you wait.
